WALKING AT THE KEENE RECREATION CENTER

Walking is offered FREE to all Senior Center members. It is a safe and weather friendly environment for members to walk. Located at the Keene Recreation Center. Walking hours are Monday - Friday from 7-10:30 am. Call the Rec Center at 357-9829 for questions or further information.


PICKLE BALL AT THE REC

PICKLE BALL is held Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 9-11 AM. The fee is $2 a day or $30 for the year. This will be held outside at Jonathan Daniels School.  On days with inclement weather, it will be held at the Recreation Center. We do have racquets here in case they do not have them. Please bring shoes to change into. Pickle Ball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. Two, three, or four players use solid paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball, similar to a waffle ball, over a net.

Kripalu Yoga Class: Mondays at 8:45AM  This can be a challenging approach to yoga practice that emphasizes meditation and breath work and encourages inward focus and spiritual atunement. Basic Premis: Practicing Kripalu Yoga can initiate a gradual process of physical healing, psychological growth and spiritual awakening.   Led by John Wall.

AGE IN MOTION
Falls are the number one reason for hospitalizations and/or having to go to a nursing home in the senior population. Age in Motion is a gentle exercise program designed to help seniors maintain or increase balance and stability which, as we age, normally decreases.


AGE IN MOTION 2:  Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM  This is a little bit easier and recommended for one who has not exercised recently.

A more advanced class, lead by Robin Blais. 


QIGONG:
Wednesdays at 10:00 AM
Qigong is the mother to Tai Chi and the practice of aligning breath, movement and awareness of exercise. It is a gentle but powerful Eastern form of exercise with slow and simple movements that encourage the smooth flow of Qi (energy) and, when practiced regularly, promotes longevity, decreases pain, alleviates stress and increases balance, strength and flexibility. This program is lead by Ginette Groome. There is a $3 fee paid to the instructor.



TAI CHI: Fridays at 8:45 AM

Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan will be taught by Richard Artese on  Fridays at 8:45 AM starting on July 7.  Tai Chi is a slow constant movement that flows evenly from beginning to end.  The movements are gentle and relaxed and support better balance, joint flexibility and overall health.  This class will consist of a short form with new postures each day and a review of the previous ones learned.  Those already actively working on Tai Chi are welcome to come to the class. There will be some warm up exercises from Shaolin Temple Chi Kung.  Wear loose clothing and smooth soled shoes.  Individual physical or medical issues (chronic or recent) will be taken into consideration and accommodated to the best of the instructor’s skills. 


Richard Artese has lived in the Monadnock Region for 50 years.  Graduated from Franklin Pierce College, he has been a teacher of all ages from day-care through high school to elders in community education at Keene State College.  Currently a Social Worker at Maplewood of Cheshire County Nursing Home, he has been a practitioner of Tai Chi for 45 years and an instructor for 35.  For more information or to sign up, come by the Senior Center or call 352-5037.

INSTRUCTOR LED FITNESS CLASSES FOR AGES 50+

LEARN HOW TO USE THE GYM EQUIPMENT

The instructions will be conducted by Tony Guarino, long time physical education instructor, coach and Director of Athletics. The classes will consist of a warm-up by stretching, safety measures while using the machines, and a nutritional diet handout. There will also be a hand-out of the different stretching exercises that we will be doing in class.  Participants should wear comfortable clothes and soft-soled shoes.  It is requested that all participants arrive about ten minutes early as the class will start promptly at 3:00.  If you have any physical limitations let Tony know and he will set up an appropriate program for you. Tuesdays from 3:00-4:00.

CHAIR YOGA: Mondays at 1:00 PM
Chair Yoga is a gentle form of yoga practiced by sitting on a chair or by standing while using a chair for support. Like regular yoga, this exercise will improve balance, strength and flexibility. Lead by Betty Christiansen, a Certified Yoga Instructor.
